Food for Thought: Seeking to exceed last year’s mark

Food for Thought is a project created in the fall semester of 2012 by NMC’s Professional Communications class to add a service learning component where students could learn communications skills in a real-life setting.  Last year’s class collected more than 20,000 food items for local food pantries.  This year’s class will be blogging about the experience as they progress through the semester.

The fall 2013 Professional Communications class at Northwestern Michigan College has the honor of running Food for Thought Fill the Pantries: Food Drive Challenge for this upcoming semester. Not only do we get to learn real life communication skills in a real life setting, but we also get to help the food insecurity problem within our community.

Our food drive kicks off on October 15 and runs until November 15 so we have time to load up our trucks and distribute the food to the local pantries in time for Thanksgiving. We will have numerous drop-off barrels around the NMC campuses for you to donate healthy, non-perishable food items in hopes that no one in our community has to go hungry this winter.

Our team, lead by Teresa Nichols and Carl Smith, hope to surpass last year’s goal of 20,000 food items. We hope to make this year the biggest yet!
