Building a home for one of our own

On Saturday, May 17, students from the NMC Commitment Scholarship Program partnered with volunteers from the Grand Traverse Habitat for Humanity to “raise the walls” on a new home for a fellow NMC Commitment Scholar and family.

This is the first home to go into the new Depot Neighborhood in Traverse City. Jenni Wagner and her daughter Crysta Wierman, a sophomore at Traverse City Central High School and NMC Commitment Scholar will be the proud owners.

As part of the Commitment Scholarship Program, students are encouraged to get involved in the community. On the senior trip back from Chicago, students came up with an idea to serve the community and their fellow Commitment friends by providing clothing to those Commitment student that had little or no means. However,

Commitment serves 18 area high schools in six counties, their passion to serve their fellow students never wavered. But facing the daunting logistics of their original idea they began searching for something new.

We discovered that Crysta was going to have one of the new Habitat homes this spring. Knowing that they would require volunteers to work on their home, we put the project idea out to the students and they quickly “digitally” raised their hands to lend support.

The Commitment Scholarship staff, students, family, and a whole host of Habitat volunteers “raised the walls” for a new home.
