Food for Thought: Look for the red barrels

Food for Thought is a project created in the fall semester of 2012 by NMC’s Professional Communications class to add a service learning component where students could learn communications skills in a real-life setting.  Last year’s class collected more than 20,000 food items for local food pantries.  This year’s class will be blogging about the experience as they progress through the semester.

You might have seen them popping around the campuses. Red plastic barrels with the Food For Thought logo are being placed in all the major buildings around NMC. So, if you have a few extra cans  to spare or want to help eliminate the food insecurity problem in our area, then please drop off any nonperishable food items at any of these locations.

Food for Thought containerAlso, look out for any drop off locations at grocery stores. So far, the dates include:

  • Traverse City Tom’s Food Markets: Oct. 19 and 20, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.
  • Traverse City Walmart: Nov. 2 and 3, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.
  • Traverse City Aldi: Nov. 10, 12 – 6 p.m.

There will also be an Unmanned Vehicle and Robotics Food Drive at the Aero Park campus on November 9 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. It’s a free event, but food and monetary donations are certainly welcome.

Many students also had the chance to spend an evening on The Champion to learn how to apply leadership learned while sailing to apply it to leadership within the service project. It was a fun, cold evening spent discussing how to make the food drive a success and how it was much the same. Both groups were thrown into it not quite knowing how things were going to go and just worked with it. It just takes teamwork and a willingness to turn it all into a success.
